Back to School - backpack/tennis shoe event
For the 2nd year in a row, NLR PD Officer Tommy Norman and the NLRPD, along with local businesses, will host a Back to School event that will this year provide a backpack and pair of tennis shoes to at least 50 NLR children.
This event will take place on Saturday, August 15th, @ 10am, at the Shoe Carnival in Lakewood Village. The first day of school for NLR is August 19th. Wal-Mart ( McCain & Maumelle ) has committed to donating the backpacks. The children chosen will have a $50.00 limit on tennis shoes.
This event would be similar to the Shop with a Cop, and officers would assist a child in choosing a pair of shoes.
Donations are needed for this event. And EVERYONE is encouraged to participate, HOW you ask?
An account has been set up, Its called the"backpack account" at any Centennial Bank (formerly Twin City Bank)....
This is another of many ways you can join with the NLR Police in giving back to the community.
I hope you will help out in this event, I plan too.

July Meeting of the Amboy Crime Watch
The July Meeting of the Amboy Crime Watch will be held Thursday evening Julty 2nd, at 6:30pm at the Amboy United Methodist Church on Military rd.State Representative Allen Kerr will be the guest Speaker.
From Rep. Kerr's Website:
“I believe that government has to be responsive and open to voters. All levels of government have lost the trust of voters. The only way to regain that trust is by doing the right things. The public has a right to know how their government business is conducted. Public servants have to hold themselves to the highest ethical standards and be willing to be open to public scrutiny.”

3/50 project to help save local business
If you knew that your purchases at a locally-owned store could keep that store in business during this recession, would you shop there more frequently?
That's the idea behind a new plan launched last week on the Web to help strengthen local economies. It's called "The 3/50 Project" and it asks you to identify three independently-owned stores that you would hate to lose.
The creator of the idea hopes to convince consumers that by spending $50 per month at those three stores it will make a critical difference for their ability to remain a vibrant part of the local economy. The 3/50 Project aims to support the local brick and mortar businesses.
Pick 3 businesses, spend $50 total per month. Save the local economy. It boils down to thinking about what 3 stores or 3 businesses that are locally-owned you would hate to see disappear. That means from the corner restaurant, gallery or store.
These are the stores that are the heart and soul of a local economy. However, the reality is that when people curtail their spending in times of recession, these are the businesses hit the hardest.
For every $100 spent at a locally owned store, $68 stays local. That compares to $43 from a "big box" or chain store purchase. As for online purchases, those return nothing to the local economy not even taxes.
Theres lots of opportunities to shop local all over NLR. Get signed up and get motivated to do this today, and help keep local people in business.

Plan to honor veterans sets off sparks
Owner of NLR site near base says he regrets enlisting city’s help
By Jake Sandlin.....
Military vehicles pass daily through the intersection where Military Drive crosses MacArthur Drive in North Little Rock on the way in or out of Camp Robinson just up the road, home to the state’s National Guard.
And just to the intersection’s south lies a small plot of grass where bar-and-grill owner Bill Yeates wants to put a monument honoring military men and women, past and present.
“Every convoy that comes out of Camp Robinson and the folks who go to work every day at Camp Robinson, they come through that intersection,” he said. “This is the best location.”
North Little Rock’s 10-member Veterans Memorial Committee was formed in October with $50,000 in startup money from the city. The City Council gave the panel authority over the memorial site selection, design and mission, with the council to give final approval.
The site at 5501 MacArthur is the only formal proposal accepted by the committee so far. Other suggestions include various spots in Burns Park and downtown.
The committee forums have at times become loud and ugly centering on suggestions that the memorial be put up at a site more out-of-the-way for Camp Robinson personnel.
“A good word would be ‘volatile,’” said Alderman Cary Gaines, who is chairman of the committee. “It’s not been pleasant.”
“It’s turned rancorous at times,” Gaines said. “I’ve been accused of going along with what the mayor wants to do and also of being on the side of what Bill Yeates wants to do. I want to go down the middle. I want all viewpoints to be heard.”
Committee member Mike Ross , former commander of the 39th Brigade, told the Amboy audience Thursday night that “a perception out there” that the panel has other interests at play is wrong.
“I don’t have a political agenda, I promise you,” Ross said at the meeting. “There’s been a lot of controversy in this. But those who don’t show up at these meetings and who sit back and gripe about it, they probably won’t show up at the memorial either.”
Panel member Zachary Warren said “I want to have a place that’s solemn where I can go and grieve, where my mother can go and grieve,” Warren said, adding that he’s torn about the location. “Does she really want to be seen doing that in front of 100 cars going by? Maybe that’s just me.”
Amboy supporters of the MacArthur Drive location remain adamant that it is the only proper spot, one members of the military pass by every day and would be able to see without making a special trip.
If a city-funded veterans memorial goes somewhere else, Yeates said he would still like to have something up at his site.
“If I had to do it all over again,” Yeates said, “that monument would be out there right now.”

Great Input Thursday Night at the Memorial Advisory Board meeting
From the Advisory Board to the audience there were some extremely good suggestions and comments made. I thought it was good the committee told us about the past suggestions so we wouldn't be repeating ourselves.
Everyone had a chance to speak there piece, all you had to do was speak up, raise your hand, or stand up. And all suggestions were taken seriously. The Board did its best to answer all questions from the crowd of about 50 attending (rough guess) . Most everyone there was supportive of the location at 5501 MacArthur dr.
Congressional Medal of Honer recipient Nick Bacon was scheduled to speak on behalf of the 5501 MacArthur location, but was too ill to attend. It has been recently revealed that Mr. Bacon was diagnosed with cancer. Our prayers go out to him and his family.
One of the most interesting , and I might say exciting to me was the announcement that the area by the main gate to Camp Robinson was not an option for a location because the National Guard already has that area spoken for. The long range plan is to build and move the museum to that place. Thats good news, and a very appropriate location for such a thing.
Thanks to both Amboy associations for hosting this event. Dara, and all you girls from Amboy are just awesome, the balloons were a great addition to keep the energy positive.
Also Thanks to the members of the Advisory Board for there service in this mission.

Questions for the cops?
Heres something we haven't done in a little while. As you all should know our Police guys and gals are full of knowledge. They are all over the place at all hours of the day and night. If its happening they usually know all about it. In the past we have posted questions and received answers from Lt Bowers at the Levy Substation. I know I have a couple of questions and Im sure some of you do too. So heres your chance to ask the experts of Law Enforcement. Just click on comments and ask away. We should get some answers in a little while.......BTW, I was privaledged to meet a new addition to the Levy family of officers yesterday. Officer Keith Phifer is a great guy and is working in the Levy area this summer. Officer Phifer who normally works as a School Resource Officer when school is in session is on the streets busting scumbags and serving the community. I hope you all have a chance to meet this really great guy, and when you do, as you should with all our public servants....Give him a pat on the back and say thanks. Thats something these guys dont get very often.
I was informed earlier this week that Lt. Bowers is suffering a "training related injury" to his shoulder, and is out of service for a little while. Hopefully he can still play along with us here. Keep him in your prayers for a speedy recovery.
Battle of the Badges Blood Drive today 6/26/09

The Battle of the Badges Blood Drive will be Friday June 26th from 7AM till 6PM at the Patrick Henry Hays Senior Center at 401 West Pershing. Please come out and help the NLR Police and Fire Departments defeat the LR Police and Fire Department by donating blood.
Last year, supporters of the NLR Police and Fire donated 108 units of blood to LR's 93. If you noticed, the blood drive is starting at 7 to provide officers working the midnight shift an opportunity to participate as well as to provide people the opportunity to donate before they go to work.
If you would like to reserve a time to eliminate a possible waiting period, please email Terry.Kuykendall@nlrpolice.org with your desired time.
Please encourage all of your family members and friends to participate as well. This is a very important blood drive for the American Red Cross. Many major blood drives are held at colleges and with it being the summer months and school not in session, blood supplies are extremely low and will continue to decrease.
The July 4th weekend is fast approaching and traditionally is a time where many units of blood are needed with an increase in traffic accidents and other types of injuries associated with boating.
Thank you in advance for your support!Sgt. Terry Kuykendall

Summer Fan Drive Underway........
The City of North Little Rock in conjunction with the North Little Rock Fire Department and the North Little Rock Health Department is asking the public to donate new or gently used box fans which will be distributed to elderly persons or those in need who are without air conditioners this summer. Captain Steve Smith, Battalion Chief of the North Little Rock Fire Department, said the Fan Drive is starting early this summer due to an unusual number of phone calls from people who are already asking for fans."We are asking the public to get involved earlier this year by donating fans now so that the protection people need from the heat and humidity will be available throughout the entire summer,"Captain Smith said.
Fans can be dropped off at any of the North Little Rock Fire Stations Monday -Friday,8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
For more information call the Central Fire Station at 340-5377.
The fans will actually be distributed at the North Little Rock Health Department, 2800 Willow Street. Personal identification and a current utility bill will be requested verifying proof of North Little Rock residency.
It is suggested that people call before going to the Health Department to make sure fans are available. A waiting list will be utilized for people who call if there are no fans available at the time.

Veterans Memorial Advisory Board Meeting Tonight!
"A nation which forgets its defenders, will itself be forgotten"
Tonight ,Thursday, June 25th at 6:30pm at the Levy Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. The Amboy Neighborhood Association along with the Amboy Crime Watch will be hosting the Ward 3 meeting of the Veteran's Memorial Board appointed by the Mayor and the City Council to discuss with the citizens of North Little Rock The particulars of what is wanted in a City Veteran's Memorial. The Board is taking recommendations on location, and design
Lets Talk Veteran's Memorial......
It all began when some friends of Bill Yaetes, owner of "My Friends Place" decided it was high time to honor the history of Military road, and Camp Robinson/Camp Pike with a monument to salute the soldiers who have served our country and have some connection to the Army post located in our backyards for 100 years. It is a noble gesture, and who in the area wouldn't want to jump on board to help with such an endeavor. Bill started collecting donations, and pledges of work for the monument. He then filed successfully to make his project a non profit, and opened an account at Twin City Bank to make it easy for folks to make donations. Plans were drawn up, and work started. Mr Yaetes thought it would be a good idea to get the City involved to hurry the progress along. There again the question came up "who wouldn't jump on board for such a worthwhile endeavor".
But things got bogged down. Our Alderman at the time tried to make a deal that would help him in the upcoming election, and when Bill saw this as what it was refused to help the Alderman get reelected and things came to a screeching halt. The City still holds the deed to the corner property connected to Bill's business which he donated at the suggestion of the Mayor. And eventually after numerous visits to City Council meetings the Mayor saw that there was a want by citizens to have a memorial of some sort in the City. Some want it to be at the site prepared by Mr. Yaetes, but some have other ideas. This is the reason for the Committee being formed.
The Mayor and City Council wanted to see if there were other ideas and passed Resolution 7326 establishing an advisory committee to determine a proper site for a memorial that would endure for no less than 99 years, and allocating up to $50,000 to complete such a memorial. Other funding could be allocated if needed.
Several locations have been recommended to the committee including 5501 MacArthur dr. A couple of sites in Burns Park including the Meadow across from the Hospitality house near the boulder with the plaque honoring Dr. Burn's. The NLR visitor's center in Burn's park, and the cemetery. Riverfront Park, The State Veteran's cemetery on Maryland ave, The Entrance to Camp Robinson, and the Somewhere on the VA grounds on Fort Roots hill are among some of the locations being discussed. What most people have asked for is a quiet place, with easy access that could accommodate large numbers of people for ceremonies, memorial services, and other activities associated with honoring veterans on holidays.
Many ideas on design have been submitted in the meetings, and unofficially as committee member have visited group meetings, and taken suggestion all along. Many people have suggested looking at similar memorials in Sherwood (at the entrance to Sherwood Forest), Jacksonville, and Maumelle (on Lake Willastein). Citizens are also encouraged to visit these sites to get a feel for what a memorial should be. Among design ideas mentioned a statue with multiple service members depicted. American/Arkansas/POW flags, plaques or stones with names of fallen military members, benches for quiet reflection. A peaceful place we can all be proud of.
I personally commend the committee, for the work they are doing. Its got to be a tough job. From what Ive seen and know of this group they will listen to ideas of the people and recommend the best place and design to the City Council, for them to have the final say. This is what they were chosen to do. Give a recommendation to the City Council, not make the final decision.
It is pretty clear that most people in Amboy want this monument on the corner of Military and MacArthur dr to be built. The past two neighborhood meetings, (Association and Crime Watch) the discussion got a little heated. Emotional would be an understatement. It seems every time we try to discuss this openly the bickering starts, and someone goes ranting without regard to who is present, or what they are saying that might be hurtful to those who have lost loved ones in past conflicts, and are there to see that their memories are preserved in a manner that would make them proud. Bickering and ranting is NO way to get what you want. It is hurtful to the people trying to do the real work, and sets back every endeavor, every step forward anyone has made to achieve any goal.
If you really want to help with the effort to build the Monument in Amboy at 5501 MacArthur. Volunteer some time to solicit donations. Volunteer some work if you are able. Donate Cash to the effort. Stop by and talk to Bill to see what you can do. It will be built, one way or the other, with public funding, or as a community effort that would truly show our appreciation.
Think about it, think about it long and hard. Put yourself in a soldiers boots....which would mean more to you?

PAL Kickball season starts Tonight!
Thats right the Police Athletic League has a Kickball program. with season opening festivities tonight at 6 pm at the North Heights Ball fields behind North Heights Recreation Center on Allen street in Levy. If your looking for something to do on Mondays and Thursday evenings head on over and support the PAL program. Carri Fredericks has worked hard to get this kickball program going for the kids, and it is sure to be a hoot. I hear the concession stand over there has some killer frito chilli pie, and a slushi machine. Sounds like the makings of a real good time to me.

Shouting match escalated into gunfire, Saturday.....
A shouting match escalated into gunfire Saturday night -- ending with the murder of a 16-year-old boy. His suspected killer is in jail. North Little Rock police arrested a 20 year old man in connection with the shooting death.
Police say two groups of people got into a fight outside of the home. That’s when investigators say 20 year old Darren Jamal Davis pulled a gun and shot 16 year old Xavier Williams. He was rushed to Children's Hospital. He died after surgery.
A Washington Avenue home was the scene of a deadly shooting just before 6:30 Saturday evening."Just upsets me knowing another life has been taken, senseless," said Rev. Benny Johnson of Stop the Violence.
"The person hasn't even lived out his life, haven't lived out half of his life," Johnson said. The shooting happened while Johnson is holding youth revivals to steer people *away* from crime."Misunderstandings. Persons getting into an argument, it doesn't take much for a person to kill somebody,” he notices.
"We can help put an end to this madness going on,” Johnson says.
And with summer approaching, "get the kids involved in something constructive. The old saying ‘an idle mind is a devil's workshop.’ If a kid doesn't have anything to do, they might get to hanging out and they will hang out with the wrong persons,” Johnson said.

Folks, We've got to do something to help our kids stay on the right track. We have got to get involved with our own neighborhood kids. What are your thoughts on this? What can we do? What can they do for us? and what can we do for them in return?

NLR Police to provide crime alerts....

Maybe you saw this on the news last night or today.
It’s called Nixle, a computer-based system that allows officers to send mass messages to residents whenever there's a traffic tie-up or a crime alert.
"Say break-ins are occurring in their neighborhood, we want them to know that," said Chief Danny Bradley.
The notice can come to your email or to your cell phone. Officers simply input the information on their computer and it’s ready for distribution just 20 seconds later.
"It's very time consuming to go door to door and notify people but this gives us a tool to let people know quickly,” Bradley said.
Officers say they do not plan to flood your emails or text messages with unnecessary alerts, only critical announcements that could help provide convenience or help keep you out of harm's way.The system is in place, all you have to do now is sign up.
I just registered for this great new service, and think you should, too. Its easy and only took about two minutes to do. There are no heavy questions to answer just input your name, Email address, Phone number, home address to make it neighborhood specific. You can add as many addresses as you wish to get more city wide alerts. Say you want to know whats going on Downtown. Simply input 300 Main street NLR 72114 (City Hall) and you will receive alerts for that neighborhood.
It immediately connects you to trusted, important, time-sensitive information via text message, e-mail, and web. Get neighborhood-level public safety and health alerts and other relevant community information that you've never been able to get anywhere else.
There are many ways to get to the Nixle website. You can go to it from the NLR Police Website, or any local news channel website, or by simply Clicking HERE to check it out. Or by clicking the link on the right side of our blog under Links of interest.
It's not available everywhere yet, but you can register for as many addresses throughout the country as you like. That way, you'll stay connected to everyone that's important to you. And as each location becomes available, you will immediately begin receiving the information.

Straighten me out on the Turnabout?
I hear of the new "Turnabout" on Pike Avenue. Where is that going to be located?Well Nunu Heres what I know about it:
The Roundabout is to be located at the south end of Pike Ave, in the curve where it meets with Riverfront rd, and west Broadway.
Roundabouts are a pretty neat way to control traffic in some areas. I dont really understand what they are trying to attempt in this specific area. The ones I have seen are used more or less to slow traffic in neighborhoods. Conway has several of these and they work for that purpose.
I know this area of Pike Ave is quite congested in the rush hours, but I dont see how this roundabout will help that situation, but hey Im no Traffic expert. I feel like the big ones like this one proposed is more ornamental than anything. They usually have nice flower beds and/or Statues in the middle of them and are pretty to look at, but kind of hard to negotiate in heavy traffic.
This is one thing on a list of a few things published that will be paid for with federal stimulus money for the City of NLR.
It is something that has been on the design table, and kicked around for a couple years at least. There is some opposition with it, but I really dont see a problem myself. With the widening of East Broadway, and the refurbishing of the whole downtown area the past several years, its about time to work on the west end of Broadway. Who knows maybe some of that will spread on up Pike (which everybody knows could use a little spit and polish) and on out MacArthur.
There will be a public hearing Wednesday, June 10th from 4-7 PM in City Council Chambers on the roundabout
Heres a link to some really good info and pictures of Roundabouts:
Look at all the info before you decide whether you like or dislike the idea.
I think it'll add to the charm of Argenta and NLR as a whole in that area.
But thats just my opinion,
Paul M
